Panettone

Christmas isn't complete without Panettone. This statement might not be an exaggeration if you know the sweet history of Panettone, the classic bread that is an indispensable part of any Christmas dinner table. When it's time to eat, serving Panettone by candlelight truly creates an indescribably warm atmosphere. Even though Christmas is a festival with a wide variety of dishes, one menu item you definitely shouldn't miss is enjoying Panettone with special people.

Panettone is a sweet bread made from soft, airy dough, filled with candied fruits and raisins. It is then baked in a tall, cylindrical dome shape and often dusted with icing sugar before serving. One of Panettone's most distinctive features is its rich and complex flavor. The combination of sweet fruits and aromatic spices gives Panettone its unique taste.

The Origin Legends of Panettone: From Milan to a Love Story

Panettone has a long history dating back to the 15th century in Milan, Italy. The history of this pastry is surrounded by several legends:

  • First Legend: Some say it evolved from a traditional Roman sweet bread made from dough and honey
  • Second Legend: Others believe it originated from a young chef named Toni, who presented a brioche-like bread packed with raisins and candied fruits to the Duke of Milan, naming it Pane di Toni, meaning "Toni's bread."

The legends of Panettone don't stop there. Another captivating story tells of a wealthy Milanese falconer who fell in love with Adalgisa, the daughter of a baker in Milan. He was distressed to see his beloved working so hard as the bakery was struggling. He disguised himself as a peasant and offered to work for free at the shop so she wouldn't have to toil.

Later, he came up with an idea to boost the bakery's business and impress Adalgisa. He created a new kind of bread by enriching it with butter, sugar, and eggsluxurious ingredients in 15th-century Milan. He sold some of his falcons to buy ingredients and made a large, dome-shaped cake-like bread filled with raisins and candied orange peel. The bread became an immense success. Adalgisa was captivated by his culinary skills, and eventually, they married, naming the bread Pan del Ton, after Adalgisa's father, Toni.

From Legend to Festive Tradition

Although the stories passed down through generations may not definitively pinpoint the true origin of this bread, asking older Italians might yield different answers. However, over time, this bread became immensely popular in Milan, and people began calling it Panettone because of its large size. Roughly translated from Italian, Panettone means "large cake."

Centuries later, Panettone's popularity continued to grow. After World War II, Panettone became more affordable and readily available. People adored this sweet bread and found joy in eating it on Christmas Day, often accompanied by hot cocoa or mulled wine. Soon, Panettone became the country's leading Christmas pastry. Today, eating Panettone on Christmas Day has become a cherished tradition in Italy and many other countries worldwide.
