Thailand is renowned for cultivating and developing some of the worlds finest durian varieties. Often referred to as the King of Fruits, durians are one of Thailands top agricultural exports. Their rich flavor, creamy texture, and signature aroma make them a premium delicacy, especially during peak season.
The Origin of Long Lab Lae Durian
In 1936 (B.E. 2479), a man named Mr. Mee Homtan planted an unidentified durian seed in Laplae district, Uttaradit province. Years later, the land came into the hands of Mrs. and Mr. Som Uplah. Among the durian trees, one stood out for its delightful taste and small seeds. They called it Tu Rian Meht Tai or the Dead Seed Durian, known for its intense yellow flesh and superior quality.
Recognition Through Competition
In 1977, a government-led competition sought to find new quality durian varieties. Mrs. Uplah entered her durian, which won the top prize. Its stable qualitiestaste, flesh, size, and tree characteristicsmet all standards. It was officially registered as a new variety in 1978 and named Long Lab Lae to honor Mrs. Uplah.
Expansion and Local Fame
Farmers in Laplae quickly began grafting the prized variety, leading to its widespread cultivation. Today, Long Lab Lae Durian is one of the most recognized durians from the region, adding prestige to Uttaradits agricultural identity.
