Acqua Panna
A Natural Spring Hidden in Tuscanys Heartland
Acqua Panna is one of the worlds most celebrated natural mineral waters, sourced from a pristine spring nestled within the 1,300-hectare Villa Panna estate in Tuscany, Italy. Surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, this spring has been revered for centuries for its soft taste and natural purity.
From the Medici Dynasty to Global Prestige
In the 14th century, the powerful Medici family purchased the land and turned it into an expansive hunting reserve. They also established a system to collect and transport water from the natural spring for personal consumption. By 1564, the waters restorative qualities were well known among Renaissance nobility.
Acqua Panna became synonymous with refinement and health, believed to aid in rejuvenation and maintain a natural balance of minerals earning its place on noble tables.
Commercial Bottling and the Evolution of Packaging
Though the spring had been known for centuries, commercial production began in the 19th century. Initially, Acqua Panna was bottled in narrow-necked glass flasks resembling Chianti wine bottles. In the early 20th century, these were replaced by larger and more modern containers.
The official Acqua Panna company was founded in 1938, although operations were halted due to World War II. After resuming in 1951, the brand quickly grew in popularity, especially among Europes aristocracy.
A Nestlé Brand with Global Reach
In the late 20th century, San Pellegrino acquired Acqua Panna, and by 1997, both were under the Nestlé umbrella. With this backing, Acqua Panna expanded its distribution to over 120 countries.
Today, it is a fixture in Michelin-starred restaurants, luxury hotels, and wine tastings around the world. Celebrated for its smooth, clean taste that enhances rather than competes with food, Acqua Panna remains the gold standard in still mineral water.
