Fluffy Duck Cocktail

The Fluffy Duck is a vintage-style cocktail that became a sensation during the 1970s and 1980s. Its signature ingredient is Advocaat, a sweet liqueur made from egg yolk and brandy, known for its custard-like aroma and velvety texture. Typically, its mixed with rum or gin, Triple Sec, and cream, then topped with soda or lemon soda to create a light, frothy finish that gives the drink its charmingly fluffy appearance.

The cocktail originated in Australia, at a restaurant called Cauldron Bubbles on Farrel Avenue in Darlinghurst, New South Wales. According to a local newspaper advertisement published on Wednesday, December 15, 1971, the restaurant was the first to introduce the Fluffy Duck Cocktail.

The ad proudly declared:

Some of our very best things here at the Cauldron Bubbles have been arrived at by a process of evolution, rather than any kind of recipe. We have just perfected a beautiful cocktail, which we call the Fluffy Duck.

The original recipe featured 1/3 oz of gin, 1/3 oz of rum, 1/3 oz of vodka, a generous portion of Advocaat, and fresh orange juice shaken well and strained into a cocktail glass.

The name Fluffy Duck is believed to refer to the drinks creamy, airy texture reminiscent of the soft down feathers of a duckling.

The creation of the Fluffy Duck coincided with a pivotal period in cocktail history a time when disco culture was booming, and bars began favoring drinks that were colorful, sweet, and visually striking. Both Australia and the United Kingdom saw bartenders experimenting with new recipes that were smoother and more approachable, appealing particularly to women who were becoming an influential part of the social drinking scene during that era.

Interestingly, the Fluffy Duck exists in two main variations, depending on regional preferences and time periods:

Rum-based Version

Ingredients:
  • 1/3 oz white rum
  • 1/3 oz Advocaat
  • 1/3 oz cream
  • 0.5 oz Triple Sec or Cointreau
  • Lemon soda (to top up)
Method: Shake the main ingredients with ice, strain into an ice-filled glass, and top with lemon soda for a soft, frothy finish.

Gin-based Version

Ingredients:
  • 1/3 oz gin
  • 1/3 oz Advocaat
  • 1/3 oz Triple Sec
  • 1/3 oz fresh orange juice
  • Soda (to top up)
Method: Combine all ingredients except soda in a glass with ice, stir gently, then top with soda and garnish with orange or mint.

In Australia, the Fluffy Duck remains a nostalgic favorite. In 2021, it was ranked #5 on Diffords Guides list of the most popular cocktails in Australia, proving that even after decades, its creamy sweetness and whimsical charm continue to captivate cocktail lovers across generations.
