The Origins of Madura Tea in Australia

Madura of Australia is a premium tea brand that has gained international recognition for its high-quality products. The company was founded in 1978 by Michael Grant-Cook and Norma Grant-Cook, a husband-and-wife team of Ceylonese tea-growing experts (from present-day Sri Lanka) who later settled in Australia.

Michael and his wife traveled to Australia and discovered land that was highly suitable for tea cultivation in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, located in the Tweed Valley in the northern part of the state. This region features fertile volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, and a subtropical climate, all of which are essential conditions for producing high-quality tea.

In 1978, the couple began planting tea for the first time using tea seeds imported from Tanzania, while also developing their own mechanical harvesting system for tea leaves. In the early stages, however, they had to spend considerable time experimenting and refining cultivation techniques, as tea farming was not yet common in Australia compared with traditional tea-producing countries.

Despite these challenges, within only a few years the tea plants began to thrive and produce leaves sooner than expected. The plants were ready for harvesting in approximately three years, which is significantly faster than the typical tea cultivation period of five to eight years before the first harvest.

The Birth of the Madura Brand

Once the tea leaves could be harvested, the couple officially began commercial tea production in 1982 under the brand name “Madura.” The name originates from the Tamil language, meaning “heaven” or “a land of happiness.”

The name reflects the natural beauty surrounding the tea plantation, which is enveloped by lush tropical rainforests, natural streams, and fertile landscapes.

In 1989, Madura launched Australia’s first locally produced green tea brand, which was very well received by consumers. The product achieved remarkable success and has remained one of the most popular green tea products in Australia to this day.

Transition of Ownership and Business Development

After Michael’s passing in 1992, the tea plantation—home to more than 250,000 tea trees—was transferred to four Australian families. These families have continued to uphold the principles and philosophy established by Michael and his wife.

As a result, Madura today is considered a truly Australian company, fully owned and operated by Australians.

Throughout the 1990s, Madura continued investing in the development of production facilities and packaging innovations. By the year 2000, the company’s tea production facility had become recognized as one of the most modern tea processing plants in the Southern Hemisphere.

Innovations in Packaging and Tea Production

One of the company’s notable innovations includes sealing tea within protective film, helping to preserve the tea’s freshness and flavor. Madura was also among the first producers in its market to introduce pyramid-shaped tea bags, which are designed to improve the infusion process and allow tea leaves to fully release their aroma and flavor.

In terms of tea processing, Madura uses the CTC method (Crush, Tear, Curl). This technique involves crushing, tearing, and curling the tea leaves to produce tea with a strong flavor and consistent quality.

Some of the tea grown on the Madura plantation is blended with carefully selected high-quality teas from leading tea-producing countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

All tea blending is carried out under the supervision of a Master Tea Blender, whose expertise, experience, and refined sensory skills ensure that each blend maintains a distinctive flavor profile and consistent quality.

Sustainability and the “From Plantation to Cup” Philosophy

One of the defining characteristics that sets Madura apart from many other tea brands worldwide is its strong commitment to sustainability in every aspect of its operations.

The company follows the principle “From Plantation to Cup,” meaning that every stage—from cultivation to the final brewed tea—is carefully managed to preserve quality and freshness. After harvesting, tea leaves are quickly transported to the factory for processing to ensure optimal freshness.

In terms of packaging, Madura implemented a major change in July 2021 by switching to 100% natural, biodegradable paper wrappers, replacing the previously used polymer-coated foil packaging.

Although this change reduced the shelf life of the tea from three years to approximately eighteen months, the company accepted the trade-off in order to maintain its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Environmentally Friendly Tea Bags

Madura’s tea bags are made from two primary plant-based fibers:

Cellulose fibers, extracted from vegetables and fruits
Manila hemp fibers

Both materials are biodegradable and safe for consumers. Using these natural fibers helps reduce the accumulation of microplastics in oceans and natural ecosystems, aligning with the company’s broader environmental sustainability goals.

Awards and Recognition

One of the most significant achievements in Madura’s history is being selected as the official tea served in the Australian Parliament, an honor that clearly reflects the brand’s quality and reputation.

Over the years, Madura has received numerous awards. Among them is the Canstar Blue Taste Award for Best Tea Bag, based on consumer feedback from more than 2,500 participants, where the brand outperformed several international competitors.

The company has also received recognition in prestigious national food competitions, including:

Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards, where it received a Gold Medal
Sydney Royal Fine Food Awards, where English Breakfast tea received a Silver Medal and Lemon Myrtle tea received a Bronze Medal

These awards highlight the brand’s consistent quality and widely recognized flavor standards.

A Diverse Range of Madura Tea Products

Today, Madura offers more than 20 varieties of tea, including:

These products cater to a wide range of consumer preferences.

One of the brand’s most popular offerings is Premium Blend, a carefully crafted combination of tea leaves sourced from several renowned tea-growing regions. The result is a tea with a rich, bright, and distinctive flavor profile that has become a signature product of the Madura brand.
