Lindt & Sprüngli
A Humble Beginning in Zurich
The story of Lindt & Sprüngli, often referred to simply as Lindt, began in 1845 in Zurich, Switzerland. It was founded by David Sprüngli and his son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, who opened a small chocolate shop called Confiserie Sprüngli. The father-son duo specialized in traditional European chocolate recipes, handcrafted with care and precision.
What began as a modest family business would eventually blossom into one of the worlds most iconic and beloved chocolate brands, known for its smooth texture, luxurious flavor, and Swiss precision.
A Game-Changing Merger with a Chocolate Pioneer
In 1899, the Sprüngli family made a strategic decision that would transform their business forever: they acquired the chocolate factory of Rodolphe Lindt, a visionary chocolatier who had invented a revolutionary production technique called Conching.
This process, which involved continuously mixing and aerating chocolate using a machine called the conche, produced a much smoother texture and intensified aroma. It turned gritty, coarse chocolate into a melt-in-the-mouth delicacy. This innovation redefined the standard of fine chocolate and became the hallmark of Lindt products from then on.
Expansion into International Markets
Following the merger, Lindt & Sprüngli rapidly gained popularity in Switzerland and across Europe. After World War II, the company expanded its footprint into the U.S. and other international markets, becoming a global name synonymous with premium chocolate.
In 1930, Lindt opened a major production facility in Kilchberg, just outside Zurich. This facility remains the heart of Lindts global manufacturing operations to this day.
The Birth of Lindor: A Worldwide Favorite
In 1949, Lindt introduced Lindor, a round chocolate truffle with a rich, silky center that melts instantly in the mouth. Designed to provide a luxurious chocolate experience, Lindor quickly became a customer favorite during holidays and special occasionsand remains one of Lindts best-selling products.
Alongside Lindor, Lindt offers a wide array of product lines to satisfy every chocolate lover, including:
