The story of Le Beurre Bordier began in 1985 when Jean-Yves Bordier, son of a family of cheese merchants, acquired La Maison du Beurre, a butter and cheese shop founded in 1927 in Saint-Malo, Brittany.
Originally aspiring to be a sailor, Jean-Yves shifted his path to butter making. He revived traditional 19th-century butter-making techniques, using wooden tools and hand-kneading to ensure the highest quality and flavor.
Production Process and Key Features
The butter is kneaded on large wooden wheels and tapped with wooden paddles to remove excess water, resulting in a creamy texture and natural aroma. The butter is aged for 72 hourstwelve times longer than typical butteryielding a deeper, more complex flavor.
Le Beurre Bordier is also uniquely shaped using wooden molds, giving it a distinctive appearance. The company offers custom butter shapes for restaurants as well.
