The intriguing history of Buffalo Wings began in 1964 at the Anchor Bar restaurant in Buffalo, New York, owned by an Italian couple, Frank and Teressa Bellissimo. At that time, the Anchor Bar's signature dish was chicken soup, which required a significant amount of chicken meat.

However, one day, an unexpected incident occurred: the chicken order arrived with only chicken wingettes and drumettes, cuts not typically favored for soup or stock. Teressa was unsure what to do with this massive quantity of chicken wings, so she put them in the refrigerator. Coincidentally, that evening, her son, Dominic Bellissimo, brought a group of friends to the restaurant. Teressa, inspired, decided to deep-fry all the wings without breading to ensure they were crispy on the outside and tender inside. She then tossed them in a special sauce she devised and served them to her son's friends.

From Coincidence to Widespread Popularity

The results were astonishing and exceeded all expectations. Everyone who tasted the wings was instantly enamored by their perfect blend of spicy and buttery flavors. The very next morning, Teressa decided to add this fried chicken dish to the restaurants menu, serving it with Blue Cheese Dressing and Celery Sticks, accompaniments that perfectly complemented the bold flavor of the Buffalo Wings.

As other customers tried it, they too raved about its deliciousness. Soon, word-of-mouth spread rapidly. People from both within Buffalo and beyond flocked to taste the original fried chicken wings. Eventually, Buffalo Wings quickly gained immense popularity throughout New York State, becoming a must-try dish for anyone visiting Buffalo.

A Cultural Icon and Celebrated Dish in America

The popularity of Buffalo Wings spread incredibly fast, even beyond restaurants. It became an integral part of American culinary culture, especially during popular sporting events like the Super Bowl American football championship. Buffalo wings became such a favorite snack that spectators at the event, 60 years ago, ordered an estimated 1.4 billion pieces, reflecting their colossal popularity.

Given its significance and deep connection to the city of Buffalo, in 1977, the City of Buffalo officially declared July 29th of each year as "Chicken Wing Day," to celebrate this enduring culinary icon.
