The story of Malibu begins on the island of Barbados in the Caribbean Sea, an island long renowned for rum production. Malibu was invented in 1978 by Tom Jago, an executive at the alcoholic beverage company International Distillers & Vintners (IDV) in England. Originally, Malibu was named Coco Rico, but in 1980, it was changed to Malibu.
The concept for Malibu arose from Tom Jago's desire to simplify the ingredients for Piña Coladas. Making this cocktail in the past was quite complex, requiring multiple ingredients, including coconut water. This led him to the idea of producing a rum blended with coconut flavor, specifically to be used as an ingredient for this cocktail. However, it later became a component in many other cocktails.
Malibu was first distilled at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, but today it is predominantly produced in Canada, with some production also in the United States and Spain.
