Woo Woo
Woo Woo (or its full name, Teeny Weeny Woo Woo) is a sweet cocktail distinguished by its fruity profile. It uses vodka as its primary alcohol, mixed with cranberry juice, and its core ingredient is Peach Schnapps. It is typically served in a Highball glass and garnished with a lime slice. With its sweet and sour taste, it's easy to drink, making it a suitable cocktail for all occasions, whether for cooling down, parties, or in entertainment venues. It's also perfect for those new to alcoholic beverages.
Origins and the Naming of Woo Woo
Woo Woo originated in the United States and is believed to have emerged between 1970-1979. Although there's no definitive evidence of its exact origin, Woo Woo gained significant fame in the 80s. There are several hypotheses related to its naming. Most people believe that the First Edition Bar in the Bayside neighborhood of New York City invented this cocktail. When served, waiters would enthusiastically shout Woo Woo, a tradition that later spread to other bars across America.
The Golden Age of Peach Schnapps and Woo Woo
The period of 1980-1989 was also the golden age of Peach Schnapps in England and America. While traditional Schnapps from Germany is an old unsweetened spirit, in England and America, it was adapted into an accessible alcoholic beverage by mixing neutral grain spirits with fruit or spice syrups and bottling them, with an alcohol content of 15-20% ABV. Peach flavor became the most popular. Besides Woo Woo, this era also saw the birth of many famous Peach Schnapps cocktail recipes, such as Sex On The Beach, Fuzzy Navel, and Silk Panties.
Peach Schnapps and Woo Woo were even mentioned in Esquire, the famous men's magazine, in 1988, by food writer William Grimes. He wrote, Peach Schnapps and the Woo Woo are leading us into strange-drink country. Jim Beam Vice President Lane Barnett earnestly says the Woo Woo is a big drink on the East Coast. Hes not brave enough to order it by its full name, Teeny Weeny Woo Woo. And dont order it in a strange bar.
Variations of Woo Woo and the Classic Recipe
Woo Woo has also evolved into other cocktail variations by modifying the base alcohol or the fruit juice mixed in. Examples include Prosecco Woo Woo, which uses Prosecco (a type of sparkling wine) instead of vodka, resulting in a lighter and fizzy taste; Blood on the Beach, which adds orange juice to the recipe; or Baby Woo Woo, which reduces the amount of vodka for easier drinking.
Woo Woo is one of the easiest cocktails to make, requiring no special equipment. Here are the ingredients:
