King Oscar
The story of King Oscar dates back to 1873 in Stavanger, also known as Canning Town, Norway. The brand's inception originated from the canned seafood company called Stavanger Preserving Company, founded by Christian Bjelland.
The Origin of Smoked Sardines and Royal Approval
This company pioneered Smoked brisling sardines in oil and began exporting fine products from Norway worldwide, largely due to the abundant sardine population along Norway's coast.
In 1902, King Oscar II, the ruler of Norway and Sweden, tasted the company's sardines for the first time and was highly impressed. He bestowed a precious gift upon the company: permission to use his name and likeness on their sardine products. This led to the birth of the King Oscar brand.
From Europe to the Global Market
After the official launch of the King Oscar brand, the company began to differentiate itself with a commitment to excellence in every aspect of production, from sourcing the finest raw materials to meticulous preparation and packaging. This reflected the brand's dedication as a premium canned seafood producer.
Subsequently, the company began exporting canned sardine products to the United States for the first time, exhibiting them at the World's Fair in Chicago. They gained overwhelming popularity, successfully dominating the US market.
Later, in 1965, the King Oscar brand embarked on its journey to Japan, gaining widespread popularity as a global leader in premium canned seafood production.
King Oscar Today: Sustainable Quality, Global Diversity
Over the decades, King Oscar has remained committed to its traditional heritage, preserving long-standing techniques and recipes. Nevertheless, the company also embraces innovation to adapt to changing consumer tastes, from producing new flavors to adopting sustainable fishing practices.
The royal endorsement has significantly strengthened and distinguished the King Oscar brand. Today, King Oscar's products extend far beyond the Scandinavian coast, covering markets across Europe, North America, Asia, and more than 40 other countries.
