Chamomile

As many know, chamomile is a flower renowned for its relaxing properties. Therefore, when unable to sleep or feeling anxious, many people often think of chamomile first.

Chamomile is a flower belonging to the same family as marigolds, but it externally resembles a daisy with white petals and a yellow center. It has a fragrant scent similar to apples. Generally, there are two popular varieties used: German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile.

The Historical Use of Chamomile in Ancient Civilizations

The history of using chamomile for its medicinal properties dates back to ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed this flower had various healing powers, from fevers to skin conditions like psoriasis and rosacea. However, its most famous historical properties are helping to treat insomnia and reduce anxiety.

During the Middle Ages, chamomile began to flourish in Europe. Europeans commonly dried and brewed it into tea to treat sleeplessness. Beyond these medicinal uses, young European women also enjoyed soaking chamomile flowers in their baths to nourish their skin and relieve fatigue.

Scientifically Proven Medicinal Properties

As the world progressed into an era of scientific advancement, the properties of chamomile flowers were further studied. It was found that in addition to promoting sleep and relaxation, chamomile also possesses properties that help reduce inflammation, prevent muscle spasms, lower the risk of gastrointestinal issues by soothing the stomach, alleviate nausea, inhibit bacterial growth, regulate blood sugar, and reduce menstrual pain.

A 2010 study found that drinking chamomile tea for one month could reduce cramping pain, alleviate severe menstrual pain, relieve restlessness, relax the uterus, and reduce the production of Prostaglandins, hormones that cause inflammation and pain.

Universal Flower: Benefits for Beauty and Holistic Health

In addition to the aforementioned properties, scientists have also discovered essential oils with health-benefiting properties in chamomile flowers. Key oils found include Bisabolol and Chamazulene, which are popular in the cosmetics and skincare industries. In skincare products, chamomile has properties that brighten skin, fade dark spots, eliminate acne scars, tighten pores, slow down aging, and treat sunburned skin. Due to these diverse benefits, Europeans nicknamed this flower the Universal Flower.

Currently, chamomile is widely popular in various regions worldwide, including Europe, North America, and Asia. It is commonly used to brew tea, as a health supplement to relieve stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
