The Scientist Behind the Mediterranean Diet : EP.1

His work revolutionized modern nutrition science and led to the discovery of one of the worlds healthiest and most sustainable eating patterns the Mediterranean Diet.
Early Life and Education
Ancel Keys was born on January 26, 1904, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. In 1906, his family moved to Berkeley, California, where he grew up under modest financial circumstances. As a child, Keys faced many hardships. To help support his family, he worked in physically demanding and dangerous jobs from assisting in lumber camps and working as a dynamite handler in gold mines, to collecting bat guano in caves. These early experiences shaped his strong work ethic, perseverance, and resilience.
Despite financial struggles, Keys was a determined and curious student with a deep interest in science and nature. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a bachelors degree in economics and political science, a masters degree in zoology, and a Ph.D. in oceanography and biology in 1930.
He later continued his studies in physiology at Cambridge University in England, earning another Ph.D. in 1936. His diverse academic background gave him a strong foundation in experimental physiology, nutritional science, and public health research.
The Path to Scientific Discovery
Before becoming world-renowned in the field of nutrition, Ancel Keys dedicated his career to scientific research across multiple disciplines particularly physiology and biochemistry. His early studies explored topics such as fish physiology, human adaptation to extreme environments like high pressure or severe climates, and the development of biochemical tools for medical and nutritional research.
In 1937, Keys joined the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene a research center that would later become internationally recognized for its contributions to human physiology and nutrition.
The Invention of the K-Ration
In 1939, the U.S. Department of Defense approached Keys to develop a compact, nutritionally balanced field ration for paratroopers during World War II. His prior research on human endurance and nutrition under extreme conditions earned him this opportunity.
The result was the creation of the K-Ration a lightweight, high-energy meal designed to provide soldiers with essential nutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in the battlefield.
Beyond its military purpose, the K-Ration reflected Keyss core belief that:
Food is the foundation of human health and performance.
The Turning Point: Understanding Heart Disease
After the war, Ancel Keys turned his focus to a growing public health concern the alarming rise of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Americans.
What intrigued him was that heart disease seemed most prevalent among the wealthier population business executives and professionals with access to good food, healthcare, and comfortable lifestyles. This contradicted the prevailing belief of the time that heart disease primarily affected the poor or malnourished.
This question sparked a groundbreaking scientific journey that would ultimately reshape the worlds understanding of diet, fat, and heart health forever.
