Piña Colada
The Sweet Taste of a Caribbean Paradise
Piña Colada is one of the worlds most iconic cocktails, hailed as the drink of paradise. It originated in Puerto Rico and features a dreamy blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juicetypically served frozen and garnished with pineapple slices or cherries.
A Tale of Pirates, Bartenders, and Invention
One origin story links the drink to the 19th-century Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, who reportedly gave his crew a mixture of rum, coconut water, and pineapple juice to boost morale.
A more widely accepted version credits Ramón Monchito Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, with inventing the drink in 1954. Tasked with creating a cocktail that captured the spirit of the island, he developed the Piña Colada after months of experimentation. Initially served without alcohol, he later added rum and blended it with ice, creating the tropical delight we know today.
Another story attributes the drinks creation to Ramón Portas Mingot, a bartender at Barrachina in San Juan in 1963, who used the same essential ingredients in a cocktail competition.
From Local Favorite to National Symbol
In 1978, the government of Puerto Rico officially declared Piña Colada the national drinka tribute to the islands rich produce and vibrant culture.
A year later, in 1979, the cocktail became a pop culture phenomenon thanks to the hit song Escape (The Piña Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes, which brought the drink into the global spotlight.
