Crystal Longan

Tropical Origins

Crystal Longan (Dimocarpus longan), also known in Indonesia as Matoa, originates from Papua Island. It was introduced to Thailand 2030 years ago, but has only recently gained popularity among fruit lovers and premium markets.

What Makes Crystal Longan Unique?

With its dark brown to purplish peel, thick translucent flesh, and aroma reminiscent of young durian, rambutan, and coconut waterthis fruit is unlike any other.
Its name in Thai, Lam Yai Crystal, was chosen for its resemblance to the longan and for easier market recognition.

Cultivation in Thailand

Initial cultivation began with green-skinned varieties in Songkhla province, followed by the purple variety in 2018. Over time, Thai growers developed more variationsgreen, purple, yellow, and redeach with its own distinct flavor and fragrance.

Pioneers like Bura Heng Yapa and Petchernsak Sasuttham helped expand the fruits popularity through dedicated cultivation and propagation efforts.

Why Its a Rising Economic Crop

Crystal Longan is disease-resistant, low maintenance, and produces up to 200 kg of fruit per tree annuallytwice a year. It is also highly resistant to common pests like fruit flies and bats.

With retail prices ranging from 700 to 1,500 THB per kg, it has earned a place as one of Thailands premium agricultural exports, with rising interest from regional neighbors.
