Green vs. Gold Kiwi
From Chinese Origins to Global Popularity
Kiwi fruit originally comes from China, where it was known as Chinese gooseberry and used in traditional remedies. In the early 1900s, it was introduced to New Zealand, where it gained popularity and was renamed kiwi after the countrys iconic bird. This name became official in 1959.
The Rise of the Golden Kiwi
Golden kiwis were developed in New Zealand following a fungal outbreak in 2010. The new variety, known as Sungold, offered resistance to disease, a smooth golden interior, and a sweeter, softer taste that quickly captured global attention.
Comparing Texture, Taste, and Nutrients
Green kiwis have a bright green flesh, slightly coarse texture, and a tart-sweet taste. Theyre covered in fuzzy brown skin and have many small black seeds.
Golden kiwis, on the other hand, have smooth or lightly fuzzy skin, fewer seeds, and a sweeter flavor with hints of mango and berry.
Nutritionally, gold kiwis contain nearly twice as much vitamin C as green kiwis. However, green kiwis provide about 1.5 times more dietary fiber. Gold kiwis are slightly higher in calories and potassium, making them great for immunity support, while green kiwis are ideal for digestion and weight-conscious diets.
Choosing the Right Kiwi for You
For a classic tangy flavor and digestive health, green kiwis are perfect. If youre seeking a sweeter, smoother fruit with an extra boost of vitamin C, golden kiwis are a fantastic choice.
