St Michel was founded in the small village of Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, on Frances Atlantic coast, by Joseph Grellier, a passionate baker. He crafted the original Galette St Michel, a rich, buttery shortbread made with fresh, local ingredients like French butter, eggs, and wheat flour.
A Biscuit that Captivated Coastal France
Constance, Josephs wife, played a vital role by selling the biscuits to wealthy Parisian vacationers visiting Tharon-Plage. Their Galettes irresistible taste and texture quickly gained popularity, prompting the formal launch of the St Michel brand in 1905.
Expanding Production with a Commitment to Quality
As demand grew, a larger factory was built in 1912still operating today. Joseph insisted on using high-quality local ingredients and traditional French baking methods, a principle that continues to define the brand.
From Galettes to Global Variety
St Michel expanded its product range to include Madeleines, Palmiers, Petits-beurre, and other premium baked goodsall made with the same dedication to quality and French craftsmanship.
Industrial Scaling and International Growth
In 1919, Félix Grellier, Josephs grandson, helped scale the business to industrial levels, preparing it for international markets. Today, St Michel is available in over 30 countries, constantly evolving to meet the preferences of diverse consumers.
Staying True to Its Roots
Despite its global expansion, St Michel continues to bake its classic Galette St Michel at the original village factoryhonoring its heritage while innovating for modern palates in other specialized facilities.
