If we were to rank the top 10 most beloved fried foods worldwide, it's highly probable that the Onion Ring would be among them. Onion rings are a type of snack and fast food that are incredibly addictive the more you eat, the harder it is to stop.

A Disputed Origin

The true origin of the Onion Ring is quite obscure, with several theories claiming to be the first to invent it. The earliest account suggests that Onion Rings originated in England, as a recipe was found in the cookbook "The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined," written in 1802 by John Mollard. This book describes a fried onion recipe that specifies using ½-inch thick onion slices, dipped in a batter made with cream and Parmesan cheese, then breaded and deep-fried in lard, served with mustard sauce.

Another theory suggests that Onion Rings originated in India, where Arab merchants commonly sold long, fish-like fried onions as street food. This quick snack was very popular among travelers, who then helped spread its popularity, making Onion Rings known in many regions.

However, neither of the two aforementioned theories has definitive evidence. The United States also claims to be the originator. In the 19th century, a man named John Mollard is said to have opened a restaurant called The Catacombs in Joliet, Illinois. He began serving fried onions as a side dish, and these crispy onion rings reportedly quickly captivated customers, making his restaurant highly famous.

Popularity in the United States and the A&W Brand

During the 20th century, Onion Rings continued to gain popularity in the United States due to the rise of fast-food restaurants and changing consumer tastes. Americans became more pressed for time and sought convenient, quick meals, making fried onions a perfect fit for their lifestyle.

Furthermore, in 1950, A&W, the famous American root beer brand, introduced Onion Rings to be consumed alongside their root beer. This move helped solidify Onion Rings as a mainstream food from then on.

Onion Rings Today

Currently, Onion Rings are a globally accepted food, found everywhere from local eateries to fast-food chains and even high-end restaurants. They are often served as appetizers, side dishes, or even as toppings on burgers and sandwiches. In some regions, various recipes have been developed, with chefs experimenting with different spices, herbs, or even types of batter to create Onion Rings with diverse flavors.

Although their history is widely debated, ultimately, Onion Rings have become a widely recognized and beloved food across various cultures worldwide. They are convenient, easy to make, and delicious with almost anything.
